Communication Networks

The technology progress in the area of Telecommunications has contributed enormously to the transition from an industrial society to an information society. The demand on high-bandwidth wired services propelled by the Internet and the enormous increase in the number of wireless telephony users have pushed the carriers and the service providers to find intelligent, cost-effective solutions for their infrastructure as well as the services they provide. In today’s information society, the development of low-cost broadband and wireless infrastructures is the key to the development of a high-tech industry and the increase of the productivity of a country. Applications that can demand increased capacity and reliable, guaranteed quality services are amongst others broadband Internet connections from home users, Virtual Private Networks (VPNs), interactive work environments, Storage Area Networks (SANs), VoIP, etc.
For example, the problem of network reliability and security is a crucial problem in today’s information society. Since telecommunication networks are used in areas such as electronic commerce, the banking industry, and the exchange of sensitive information, the reliability and security of these networks is one of the most important requirements. This problem is more pronounced in current networks, where the very large data rates utilized imply that a malicious user can gain access (or can restrict access) to a very large amount of data.
Taking into account what has been discussed above, the KOIOS Center aims at the development of technologically advanced solutions that are also cost-effective that will allow for the support of high-quality existing and new services. Telecommunication companies as well as service providers (e.g., triple-play service providers) can benefit substantially from the activities of the Center via the improvement of their networks and the services they provide. These companies will be able to develop new commercial activities and they will be able to offer new and better services, more efficiently and less costly, and as a result will increase the productivity and competitiveness of the Cyprus economy.
